After spending some time in Beth Woods’ class, it became apparent her Kindergarten students are using technology and creativity hand in hand to help learn vocabulary.

An engaged group of 20 Kindergarteners is sitting on the floor watching intently, while another student steps up to the camera.  Beth Woods’ students are learning/reinforcing vocabulary by modeling it for their teacher, fellow classmates and future students.  summitteachie.jpg

The letter of the day is “J”.  Mrs. Woods spends time with the group brainstorming words that begin with that letter.  Jacks, jacket, jeep and jump are just a few of the words the class produces.  Once the words are chosen, the students find props as necessary and decide how they are going to display the word to the camera.

Mrs. Woods then compiles the videos and posts them to her blog.  Students are encouraged to review certain words and letters by visiting the blog.  Check it out at: http://bwoods.blog.wpsdk12.org.  This online library servers numerous purposes as students, at their leisure and convenience, can access the videos.  This also a great way for prospective Kindergarteners to see what they will be doing in class during the next year.

With every group of incoming students, this type of learning and exposure to technology is something that helps set a foundation.  These students can use these skills as they grow in school.  Becoming more comfortable with technology and learning how to use it to help learning is something these students are learning at an early age.  Teachers like Mrs. Woods should be commended for pushing aside any apprehension that these students are too young to learn and use technology.
