colmay10.jpgOur Columbine community celebrated Earth Day with day long activities for all children.   Students, with help from Ginny Wills of the U. S. Forest Service, planted seedlings, took measurements from prior plantings of trees and compared data. Fifth graders built a “Legacy Garden” consisting of three mini green houses to be planted with vegetables for us to harvest.  This continues a tradition of “Legacy Gardens” left by former fifth grade classes. Fifth graders also worked tirelessly on mulching our nature trail built in prior years by fifth grade classes. The library hosted the Columbine Café poetry readings.  Third and fourth graders performed original and published poems.  Platte River Water Shed personnel brought their riparian trailer, teaching students about watershed management.  Second graders met with Rich and Linda Baker, former beekeepers who shared their experiences.  Fourth and fifth grade Young Environmental Stewards put on puppet shows for Pal and Kindergarten sharing what they’ve learned this spring about the earth.  All students helped repair erosion damage on the Columbine playground.   They studied the causes of erosion and the importance of prevention.  At the end of the day, we were proud of the work we accomplished and the lessons we learned.  Hopefully all our work is helping to make our world  a better place.
